There are over 70 million people who speak Tamil. A recorded Tamil literature has been documented for over 2000 years. It is one of the longest-surviving classical languages in the world. The banknotes of four countries (India, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Mauritius) have the Tamil text.
泰米尔语属达罗毗荼语系南部语族，是达罗毗荼语系中最重要的语言，印度宪法承认的语言之一。分布于泰米尔纳德邦，使用人口约3500万。此外，也使用于斯里兰卡、东南亚、东非、南非、印度洋和南太平洋中的岛屿。泰米尔语在公元前300～前100年间已经形成了自己的文学语言，并采取了南婆罗米字母。现代泰米尔文即由此发展而来。它是世界上生存时间最长的古典语言之一。 四个国家（印度，斯里兰卡，新加坡和毛里求斯）的钞票上都印有泰米尔文。泰米尔语是这四个国家的官方语言。
